Empowering Wāhine Through Clothing Design: A Collaboration with Waiapu Road

Jonique Oli, the driving force behind Waiapu Road, is passionate about empowering women through beautiful and comfortable kākahu (clothing) designed in Aotearoa New Zealand. She came to Talisha Bowmar Design seeking unique repeat pattern designs that incorporated Māori iconography – specifically Pātiki (flounder), Poutama (stairs), and Rauru (fern fronds).

Jonique's vision was clear: distinctly Māori designs with a personal touch, avoiding cliché aesthetics. Clean lines and minimalism were key, and she embraced our collaborative approach, welcoming creative input and revisions. Vibrant colors and a show-stopping impact were also high priorities. Through an iterative design process, we explored various directions, incorporating Jonique's valuable feedback and tweaks until achieving the desired effect. Her enthusiastic response marked the successful completion of the design phase.

Jonique's keen eye for detail then led her to China to collaborate with munufacturers on translating the designs into a luxurious reality. Inspired by traditional Tāniko weaving, the final products – soft, flowing wrap top and matching skirt sets – exude elegance and sophistication.

Jonique's undeniable influence in the Māori wahine clothing market is evident. Social media erupted with praise for the beauty and uniqueness of the Waiapu Road pattern samples, reflecting the sell-out success her designs consistently see after launch. This success is a testament to the collaborative power of Jonique's vision and our design expertise.
